Most interesting text read

The text that we have read in this class that has interested and engaged me the most was “Call it sleep.” This was the most interesting to me because I don’t have that much knowledge about Jews and Judaism as a whole so it was good to get a whole new perspective on how different Jewish people live their lives and assimilate to American culture. What made the text a lot more engaging than the others that we have read is that there is a little Jewish kid who doesn’t really follow his religion at home. But when he is outside, the friends he has and the outside influences he encounters teaches him about the religion he knows so little about. His mom even sends him to a school where he is taught by a rabbi. It was interesting to see a kid that was that young in age to experience the things that he did. For example, his father was arguing with his auntie and it got physical so he ran away with a friend and ended up by train tracks. He proceeded to walk on those tracks and was eventually electrocuted but was saved by the ambulance. When he got carried home, it was the first time that his father was genuinely concerned about David. He and his father didn’t have a great relationship in the story where his father saw his son as too soft and needed to toughen up. But after that situation, his father and his relationship would grow closer.
