- Explore and analyze, in writing and reading, a variety of genres and rhetorical situations.
I think the writing piece that is closest to accomplishing this is the analysis of the text “What I must Say to You” because the process with that was to read the text, then explore any possible themes and write about it. I chose a passage from the text then diving deep into it and explaining your perspective of what you read and its importance.
- Develop strategies for reading, drafting, collaborating, revising and editing
I accomplished this course outcome in Paper 1 where I was able to read through my own paper and even get feedback during peer review to strengthen my paper. A comment I got during the revision process was “don’t be vague with your thesis because it is the basis of your argument and paper. Be clear and straightforward.” This helped me edit where it would be easier for the reader to understand what the paper would be about after reading the first couple sentences.
- Recognize and practice key rhetorical terms and strategies when engaged in writing situations
I think that my close reading analysis of the “Paper Menagerie” is closest to accomplishing this. I took a passage from the text where to the reader it probably meant a bunch of different things to them personally. I then analyzed it from my perspective and in my own words explained what the passage meant. I explained Jack’s mom’s situation and her struggling relationship with her son.
- Engage in the collaborative and social aspects of writing processes
- Understand and use print and digital technologies to address a range of audiences
I accomplished this with my research for the final paper where I was taught how to use Jstor in order to get articles and other outside sources to put in my paper. When searching for an outside piece to compare to the stories in my paper, I basically just typed the topic I was writing about and Jstor would give articles that are connected to it or similar to what I am talking about.
- Locate research sources(including academic journals articles, magazines, and newspaper articles) in the library’s databases or archives and on the internet and evaluate them for credibility, accuracy, timelines, and bias.
I accomplished this in the current paper that im writing which is the argumentative paper #3. I used the library database to look for an article that supports the argument that I made, which was that America’s forced assimilation has negative effects on immigrants and their households.
- Compose texts that integrate your stance with appropriate sources using strategies such as a summary, critical analysis, interpretation, synthesis, and argumentation.
I accomplished this course outcome when in Paper #2 where I used more than one of the texts that we read and made arguments where both of the texts had a connection somehow. The texts used were the “ Paper Menagerie” and “ Call it Sleep.” I didn’t use any quotes from both texts but rather paraphrased the parts of the text that connected to what I spoke about and deeply analyzed the events.
